PART2: SWITCHFOCUS INTERVIEWS SYLVESTER SERENE OCANSEY: TALKS ABOUT CHEATING, SHADES OTHER MODELS AND MORE

SF: Talking about designers, who is your favourite in Ghana?
JS: I don't think i have a favourite designer. I love all the designers in Ghana. Every Ghanaian designer is amazing and I love them for a particular reason. So I love all.
SF: What is your sense of style?
JS: Currently when people see boots, unfortunately I'm not in boots today because I specifically said today I'm not gonna wear boots. And my friend Felika was even bored that I'm not gonna wear boots. So when people see boots, they see me. Especially when you tuck the trousers into the boots. So that's my style. I love this cowboy funky daring but simple kinda look.
SF: Do you consider yourself famous?
JS: Famous? I'd say not yet cos I'd be famous when I post a picture of my knee and I'd get up to billions of likes on instagram and that one I'd consider myself famous.
SF: Hahaha that's like the Kim Kardarshian famous.
JS: Yeah
SF: So do you consider yourself as a regular then?
JS: Naa. I wouldn't say I'm regular and I wouldn't say I'm famous. I'm just in between.
SF: So how do you handle the pressure cos i'm sure people always want to see you?
JS: Yeah a whole lot especially after photoicon.I'm not the kinda person who uses a different number for whatsapp and another for calling but after the show I had to cos I was getting a lot of attention, calls and when I go to events people want my number, they wana hangout privately and stuff like that. But I'm getting through though. I'm not a fan of crowd but I'm very nice. I don't like crowd just that.
SF: What do you mean 'hangout with you privately'?
JS: Ermm like they don't wana see me with other people. They just want me for themselves.
SF: Would you ever shoot nude?
JS: Ok confession..I've actually shot nude before. I shot it with Kwesi Asefoah Photography. It was a test shoot that's why it's not really out there. It came out good but I didn't think it was something to hit the internet with. I don't wana be cliche but I can do nude if only I wouldn't look too raw like I'm selling myself sexually but something artistic.
SF: Do you have friends in the industry?
JS: Yeah I have. Felika is also a model and a big sister to me. Then Miss Julie, the famous top model, Uthman, who is my best friend ermm yeah.
SF: You didn't mention Clinton ermm Poje and...
JS: Yeah yeah Clinton is also my best friend and Poje. Poje is actually from where my mum comes from in Nigeria so we kinda speak the same local language.
SF: Now I'm doing the names for you.
JS: Yeah awkward hahahahaha.
SF: Where do you wana see yourself in the nearest future?
JS: Ermm I wana see myself flying all over the world for fashion shows, my name becoming one of the biggest not just in Africa but across the world in Asia, Europe and  America and I wana have a billboard in TimeSquare, NY. I just wana be a known face in the industry. Also I'd have expanded my project and would have finished my short-term course in marketing then I'd be a marketing manager for a brand or a product or in an office.
SF: Do see any model as a threat?
JS: Ok I'll say this with the deepest sense of humility no I don't see anybody as a threat to me. But it's so obvious I'm a threat to a whole lots of people. I know them and they throw it to my face like it's a sweat. So I'm rather a threat to them.
SF: What do you think is the reason?
JS: I don't know. Yeah I've done stuff and have been nominated for awards as compared to other models who have been in the industry longer than I have but still you shouldn't measure your road to success with mine.
SF: Speaking of awards, have you grabbed any? And tell us about your recent nomination
JS: Yeah the recent nomination is the African Entertainment Legend Awards. I'm in the category of the emerging male model in Africa and I'm there with Clinton.
SF: Do you think you stand chance of winning?
JS: Yeah I do cos I was nominated in this same category last year and I went all the way to Nigeria for the the show but then I didn't get the award. I think Francis Beacon got the award and for me to be nominated this year proves that they've seen something. Aside the fact that they'll be judging through voting, the jobs you've done and how known you are in the industry and stuff ermm so far I think the voting is going well. I've seen one person who is leading and I follow closely. But I'm sure if they accumulate everything I stand a better chance of winning.
SF: Would it break you if you don't win?
JS: In fact last year I was so bent on winning and when i didn't win, it became like a heat in my chest. I was so sad I didn't get the award but then I tried to psych myself up that even getting nominated is winning already. So this year even if I don't win it wouldn't break me cos out of all the emerging male models in Ghana my name came up.
SF: If don't win, who do you think is worth it?
JS: Aside that Clinton is my friend, when it comes to judging like this I'm usually sincere and very blunt. People say I can't be a judge at an event cos I'm very blunt so I'd prefer Seun Logan to win. Yes...cos he's really done a lot. In a short time he has walked in shows in Milan,Paris and other parts of the world so if I don't get the award, I think he deserves it.
SF: Has anyone likened you to Denrele Edun?
JS: Oh yeah. So many times. For instance when I went for the program in Nigeria, people saw me and they were like you really look like Denrele. So they introduced me to him and he was shocked to see someone who looks just like him just that he's fairer than I am. Now he's a very good friend of mine and my current look and the shoots I've done were inspired by him.

SF: What's your kind of music?
JS: I love blues..love songs errrm any song that talks about love. I'm a fun of Westlife, Celine Dion, Jennifer Hudson, Ariana Grande and so on.
SF: Do you dance?
JS: Yeah I do. A whole lot.
SF: Is it the traditional Nigerian dance?
JS: No hahahaha I dance everything.
SF: What's your favorite food?
JS: Spaghetti. Prepared by me hahaha
SF: What would make you end a friendship with a person?
JS: Hmmm lets see errm disrespect. Disrespect in the sense that I love my privacy generally so if you invade my privacy without consult, use my stuffs without permission, you talk about my business to other people, I'll just cut you off completely.
SF: What would attract you to a person?
JS: Someone who knows how to talk and every word that comes out of their mouth has meaning and make sense. So good and knowledgeable words get me attracted to people.
SF: Do you have any quote?
JS: I wouldn't say it's a quote or maybe it is but it's just three words..WAKE, PRAY and SLAY.
SF: Is there something we don't know about you that you wana add up? Probably you're a serial killer or something?
JS: Hahahahaha I wish. But i think I pretend a lot and that's what most people don't know. Even if you hurt me I'll just pretend everything is cool till when your cup is full then I'll just cut you off. So I pretend and I don't like waiting.
SF: When was the last time you had sex?
JS: Hahahaha my girlfriend is in Nigeria and I'm here so this question gonna be chaotic hahaha. Well, we're in September and I haven't had sex and I'm sure I didn't have one in August but I did loads of stuffs in July. So it would be at the ending part of July.
SF: Protected or unprotected?
JS: Protected cos you know I can't deal.
SF: How was it and was it with your girlfriend?
JS: Ermmm I really wanted to have fun so I got drunk and did it and it wasn't with my girlfriend hahahahaha.
SF: So you cheated?
JS: Hahahahaha errrm you know I'm not perfect and my girlfriend was in Nigeria so I had no choice.
SF: Which mean you ate from outside?
JS: Yeah fast food hahahahaha. It's really hard and she knows that I can't stay without sex. She has her weakness and I have mine and we talk about it all the time.
SF: Are you in an open relationship?
JS: Naa we haven't declared that yet.
SF: Ok. So would it happen again?
JS: Hahahaha hell yeah I can't lie hahaha.
SF: Who are your favourite models?
JS: For the ladies, there is this half Jamaican-half American model by name Tami Williams. I just love her. She's beautiful I think you should check her out. And for the males I'd go for Sang Woon. He's Chinese and I love his his eyes. Like he has no eye lashes hahaha and his bone structure is amazing. So yeah those are my two favourites.
SF: Any favourite photographers?
JS: There are two photographers I really wana shoot with in Ghana. 1Grandberry and then this other one by name Bobpixel but outside Ghana I really really wana shoot with Remi Adetiba. He's a Nigerian photographer and was the official photographer for Africa Next Top Model. He's just phenomenal.

                                                       Tami Williams
                                                     Sang Woon

SF: It seems you didn't throw any shade which I was waiting for. You kinda played it cool.
JS: Hahaha I don't really know who to but currently the model I'm not a fun of is Victoria Michaels. You see it's shocking but I'm not a fun of her. I used to but not anymore. Because of something she did. She disrespected models at an event. I think at the Mercedes Benz African Fashion Week she was the brand ambassador and because of that lots of models auditioned cos they thought since she was on board, they would get paid and paid very well. We came to do all the fittings and later they told us they wouldn't pay and instead of her as a model who has gone through the same stress till her breakthrough came to defend us and fight for us, she was standing there telling us to just do it for free. Just like that? Is she trying to tell us that she didn't take money as a brand ambassador? And  she wants us to come and walk for free and when we finish we'll come and pick tro-tro at 12 midnight to wherever we came from It was just nasty and I couldn't take it. And aside that, plus the small small underground things she did and conversations she had with some models I wasn't really a fun of it.
                                                     Victoria Michaels
SF:Wow. That's a lot. And the the interesting thing is I was actually thinking of someone at your level.
JS: There's this person and I wouldn't even waste time throwing shade at him cos he's not even in my category. Like I've left that category and he's just killing himself for nothing. Cos it's through me he got into the industry and he's name Mide Tobi. He's a Nigerian but he's here and I don't know why he compares himself to me. Meanwhile morning,afternoon,evening..everyday,every week, every month, every year they will always pick me over you. He's just hating for no reason and I don't care about him. I don't give an eff if he's living or not.
SF: I think  that shade will bring us to the end of the interview. Thank you for your time.
JS: Thank you too for having me.
